What does the EU PPWR mean for you?

The new European packaging regulation will affect all businesses except micro-enterprises. We have put together a clear timeline so you know exactly what applies to you as a manufacturer or producer, and from when.

More sustainable packaging for all of Europe.

PPWR EU

Less waste.
More responsibility.
Greater opportunities.

Exemption: micro-enterprise (EU and Czech standard)

A micro-enterprise is the smallest category of small and medium-sized enterprises. The PPWR does not apply to you only if you meet both criteria at the same time:

  • Fewer than 10 employees
  • Annual turnover or balance sheet total up to EUR 2 million (approx. CZK 50 million)

PPWR obligations timeline

Four key deadlines that will determine what your packaging looks like.

  1. 2026

    From 12 August 2026

In force since 12 August 2026 – it already applies to you
    • PFAS limits – for food-contact packaging (relevant for barrier coatings).

    • Heavy metal restrictions – lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium combined max. 100 mg/kg in the packaging.

    • Declaration of Conformity (DoC) + technical documentation – mandatory conformity assessment before the packaging is placed on the market.

    • EPR registration and fees – in every country you sell to.

    • Identification details on the packaging – who manufactured or imported it, ideally via a QR code.

  2. 2028

    From August 2028

    • Harmonised labelling of material composition directly on the packaging – uniform across the EU.

  3. 2029

    From February 2029

    • Reusability labelling of packaging + QR codes.

    • Eco-modulation of EPR fees – the more recyclable the packaging, the lower the fees. Recyclability starts to pay off financially too.

  4. 2030

    From 1 January 2030

    • Minimum recyclability grade C – at least 70% of the packaging weight.

    • Ban on excessive packaging – no more double walls, false bottoms and unnecessary layers.

    • Max. 50% empty space in grouped, transport and e-commerce packaging.

Don't wait for the next deadlines – choose packaging that will still comply in 2030
